Break away from the typical tourist routes and explore the lesser-known roads of Nagano. This region offers some of the most rewarding hill climbs in Japan, and our routes capture its quiet roads, rugged terrain, and breathtaking views. From iconic roads like the Shibu Pass to hidden valleys, each day brings a new challenge and unmatched scenery. This itinerary features 4-6 days of remarkable rides, with an option to extend if you crave more adventure.

DAY 1

Sakaemura

Distance: 125km

Elevation Gain: +3,200m

Experience a ride like no other. Starting in the heart of Nozawa, we’ll climb to the top of the ski resort, taking a hidden back route towards Nagano’s scenic neighbour without crossing any borders.
Alone the way. we li stop bv a riverside spot where vou can dig vour own onsen-a perfect taste of Japanese mountain culture. The main road for the day is as unique as it gets, constantly changing in style and scenery as if you’re riding ten different roads in one.  Our descent takes us into the main valley, where a final climb up a quiet forest road leads us back to Nozawa.

DAY 2

Myoko and the Lakes

Distance: 115 km

Elevation Gain: +2,700m

Today’s ride is all about lakes, mountains and ski resorts. Starting at our local small Hokuryu Lake, we aim for the second biggest lake in the prefecture , Nojiri lake .After we’ll cross into Niigata Prefecture, climbing towards the Myoko area, known for its landscapes and ski resorts. From here, we tackle our second climb up Madarao, where wide-open views and crisp mountain air await.
After a gentle descent into the liyama Valley, we finish with a final smaller climb, making our way back to Nozawa. This day offers a mix of varied landscapes, from lush valleys to reflective lake shores.

DAY 3

Kijimadaira and the Rice Fields

Distance: 105 km

Elevation Gain: +2,500m

This route keeps things close to home while offering fresh terrain and quiet roads. We’ll climb to the top of Nozawa’s ski resort, then take a unique path through open fields and campgrounds, where locals graze cattle. A fast, thrilling descent follows, leading us to our next climb up Kijimadaira, another hidden gem ski resort. After hours of riding in near solitude, we’ll re-enter civilisation, finishing with an easy spin along rice fields and river paths that bring us back to Nozawa. The quiet roads and local character of this day make it a true hidden highlight.

DAY 4

Nabekura – The Unknown Valley

Distance: 90 km

Elevation Gain: +2,800m

With this route, we venture into one of Nagano’s least-traveled areas. Starting with a descent to the Chikuma River, we’ll follow its gentle curves along a scenic riverside road, moving past quiet train
stations and village life. From here, we climb up to Nabekura, an isolated valley filled with thick forests, tranquil rivers, and semi-abandoned villages. It’s a day of discovery, where each turn offers new and surprising views. After exploring the hidden valley, we take a long, winding climb back through the woods, leading us home to Nozawa with another satisfying day on the bike.

DAY 5

Shigakogen

Distance: 112 km 

Elevation Gain: +3,000m

Time to go bigger. This ride includes the highest national highway in Japan, reaching an impressive 2,172 meters. We’ll start with a long climb, making our way through Shiga Kogen, a renowned ski resort set amidst deep forests and towering mountains. Once we emerge from the trees, open views reveal the Northern Alps in all their glory. After reaching the high point, we descend towards Kusatsu, a famous and lively mountain onsen town. To finish, we’ll tackle one last loop, completing the day with an extra climb and a sense of accomplishment after reaching new heignts.

DAY 6

Karuizawa – Kusatsu

Distance: 140 km 

Elevation Gain:  +3,300m

Our final day is a true epic. Starting with a climb out of Kusatsu, we take on a series of unexpected roads, moving through high mountain passes with incredible views. After a scenic descent, we loop around the active Mt. Asama, Japan’s always-steaming volcano, a stunning sight that reminds us of nature’s raw power. Leaving the open plains, we head back into dense forests, with roads that twist and turn through the trees until we reach our final destination, the stylish mountain town of Karuizawa. It’s a memorable finale, capping off the tour with an unforgettable ride through Nagano’s dramatic landscapes.

EXTRA ACTIVITIES

Yoga practice before/after riding. 

There is an option for a day on the mountain bike and experience some of the trails in Nozawa Onsen , around its bike park and thru the trails in the area for the ones .

Also , around the area there is several Golf courses where you can enjoy another Japanese experience on a different “green”.

There is water activities on a lake we can arrange as well such as wakeboard or SUP .

Based on a minimum of 4 customers and a double occupancy room. Single room ask for quote. E-bike has extra cost.

Tokyo will be the nearest option with less than 2 hours on a bullet train (Shinkansen) from Tokyo station to Iiyama  (Plus the connection from the airport either Haneda or Narita to the city). Then a gentle  20 min ride thru the countryside to Nozawa (car/bus).
