THE EXPERIENCE

La Rioja is one of Europe’s great hidden gems for gravel cycling. Beyond its world-famous vineyards lies a network of quiet farm tracks, forest roads, mountain trails, medieval villages, and rolling landscapes that seem purpose-built for adventure on two wheels.

This guided gravel tour combines the best of Rioja Alta, the Sierra de la Demanda, and the vineyards of Rioja Alavesa. Over five unforgettable days, we’ll ride through historic wine country, climb into remote mountain valleys, explore traditional villages, and experience the rich gastronomy and culture that make La Rioja one of Spain’s most celebrated regions.

THE ITINERARY

Day 1 — Logroño to Nájera

Distance: 72km

Elevation Gain: +1,400m

Leaving Logroño behind, we immediately enter the heart of Rioja wine country. Quiet gravel roads and secondary lanes wind through endless vineyards, passing some of the region’s most famous wine-producing villages including Fuenmayor, El Ciego, Cenicero, and Alesón.

The route gradually becomes more rural as we head towards Nájera, one of the most historic towns on the Camino de Santiago. Surrounded by red sandstone cliffs and rich medieval heritage, Nájera provides the perfect introduction to the landscapes and culture of La Rioja.

Day 2 — Nájera to Ezcaray

Distance: 55 km

Elevation Gain: +2,000m

Today’s stage takes us deep into the mountains of the Sierra de la Demanda. Leaving the vineyards behind, the landscape changes dramatically as gravel roads climb through forests, remote valleys, and high mountain terrain.

This is the queen stage of the tour, offering challenging climbs and spectacular views over northern Spain. The reward is the beautiful mountain village of Ezcaray, known for its traditional stone architecture, outdoor culture, and exceptional gastronomy.

Day 3 — Ezcaray Gravel Loop

Distance: 55 km Elevation Gain: +1,200m

A full day dedicated to exploring the mountains surrounding Ezcaray. Remote gravel roads lead through pine forests, hidden valleys, and quiet rural landscapes where nature dominates the horizon.

Far from busy roads and tourist routes, this stage showcases some of the finest gravel riding in Spain. The combination of flowing tracks, mountain scenery, and traditional villages makes it a favourite among experienced gravel cyclists.

Day 4 — Ezcaray to Laguardia

Distance: 72 km

Elevation Gain: +800m

Descending from the mountains, we follow sections of the former railway converted into the scenic Vía Verde del Oja. The route gradually returns to wine country, crossing rivers, vineyards, and rolling countryside before entering Rioja Alavesa.

Our destination is Laguardia, one of Spain’s most beautiful walled towns. Perched on a hilltop above the vineyards, its medieval streets and spectacular views create an unforgettable atmosphere.

Day 5 — Laguardia to Logroño

Distance: 44 km

Elevation Gain: +1,000m

The final day explores the vineyard-covered hills between Laguardia and Logroño. Quiet gravel roads weave through centuries-old wine estates, offering magnificent views across the Ebro Valley and surrounding mountains.

As we return to Logroño, we celebrate the end of the journey in one of Spain’s great gastronomic capitals. It’s the perfect finale to five days of outstanding gravel riding through the heart of La Rioja.
