Visiting La Rioja During the Grape Harvest: A Cycling Experience
There is something very special about visiting La Rioja during the grape harvest.
For a few weeks every year, the landscape changes completely. The vineyards are full of activity, tractors and trucks move between the fields and wineries, and small villages become much busier as an entire region comes together to harvest the grapes that have been growing throughout the year.
For cyclists, it is one of the most interesting times to discover La Rioja.
You don’t simply see the vineyards. You see the whole region working around them.
And there is something else you experience when you travel through Rioja during the vendimia: the smell.
The smell of fresh grapes, crushed fruit and fermentation follows you through the countryside and into the villages and wineries. It is something that photographs simply cannot capture.
When is the grape harvest in La Rioja?
The exact dates of the Rioja grape harvest, or vendimia, change every year depending on the weather, altitude, grape variety and the ripeness of the grapes.
Traditionally, the harvest in Rioja was later and could extend over a much longer period.
A good example is the 2008 harvest. The first grapes were picked on 11 September, but the harvest only became widespread around the second week of October and finally ended on 9 November. The timing was therefore much more spread out than in some recent years.
Today, however, the dates can be considerably earlier.
An increasingly early harvest
The timing of the grape harvest depends on the conditions of each year, but in recent years there have been harvests that have started noticeably earlier.
In 2019, for example, the Consejo Regulador reported a generalised advance of around ten days.
And 2026 is another particularly striking example.
By 10 September 2026, the Consejo Regulador reported that the harvest was already generalised across Rioja, with a particularly rapid accumulation of sugars in the grapes following the high temperatures of the preceding weeks.
This is one of the fascinating things about visiting La Rioja during the vendimia: there is no single fixed harvest date.
Every year is different.
And that means that travelling to Rioja during harvest is not simply about choosing a date on the calendar. It is about experiencing the region during one of the most important moments of its agricultural year.
What is La Rioja like during the vendimia?
During harvest, the countryside becomes incredibly active.
The vineyards are no longer quiet fields. People are working among the vines, grapes are being collected and transported, and wineries are receiving the year’s new harvest.
You will see tractors and trucks travelling along the small roads between vineyards and villages. You may see people picking grapes by hand, workers checking the vineyards and wineries receiving the freshly harvested fruit.
And the activity continues in the villages.
Small towns and villages throughout Rioja become part of the harvest process. Bars, restaurants, wineries and local businesses are busy, while families and workers come together during these important weeks.
It is a very different experience from visiting La Rioja simply as a wine tourism destination.
You are seeing the wine region at work.
The smell of the grape harvest
There is another way to experience the vendimia that you don’t notice in photographs: the smell.
During these weeks, the air around the vineyards and villages has a very distinctive aroma.
The countryside smells of freshly picked grapes, crushed fruit and the first stages of fermentation.
As you cycle through the vineyards and approach the wineries, you can often smell the grapes being processed and the wine beginning to ferment. It is a rich, fruity and sometimes slightly sweet smell that becomes part of the experience of travelling through Rioja at harvest time.
Everything seems to smell of grapes and wine.
It is one of those details that makes cycling during the vendimia so special. You are not just seeing the harvest; you are surrounded by it.
You can see the activity in the vineyards, hear the tractors and machinery moving between the fields, and smell the freshly harvested grapes and the fruit as it begins its transformation into wine.
It is difficult to explain this experience without being there.
You simply have to cycle through La Rioja during the harvest and experience it for yourself.
Why cycle through La Rioja during the grape harvest?
This is one of our favourite times of year for cycling in Rioja.
The roads between the vineyards allow you to move slowly through the landscape and see what is happening around you.
Instead of simply driving from one winery to another, you can cycle through the vineyards, stop in small villages, take photographs, have a coffee or lunch and visit wineries along the way.
You can also combine different types of landscapes in the same trip.
One day might take you through the vineyards around Laguardia and San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Another can take you towards San Millán de la Cogolla, with its historic monasteries and mountain scenery, or towards Ezcaray and the Sierra de la Demanda.
The combination of cycling, wine, villages, gastronomy and landscape makes the experience particularly special.
The perfect season for a self-guided cycling tour
The grape harvest is also a fantastic time to discover La Rioja on a self-guided cycling tour.
A self-guided trip gives you the freedom to experience the region at your own pace.
You can start your ride when you want, stop whenever something catches your attention and spend more time in the places you enjoy.
During the vendimia, this flexibility is especially useful.
Perhaps you want to stop and watch the harvest taking place in a vineyard.
Perhaps you discover a small village where there is more activity than usual.
Perhaps you want to spend longer over lunch, take photographs or visit a winery.
With a self-guided cycling holiday, the route gives you direction, but you decide the rhythm.
At Vamos Bike Tours, we provide the route planning and local knowledge so you can concentrate on enjoying the experience.
You don’t need to worry about finding the best cycling roads, choosing where to stop or planning every detail yourself.
You simply get on your bike and discover La Rioja.
A different way to experience wine tourism
Wine tourism is often about visiting wineries and tasting wine.
Cycling through La Rioja during the harvest allows you to see what happens before the wine reaches the bottle.
You can see the vineyards where the grapes are grown, the people harvesting them and the wineries receiving the new crop.
You can understand how closely the wine is connected to the landscape and to the small communities around it.
And, of course, you can finish the day with a glass of Rioja wine and some local food.
For us, this is what makes cycling such a good way to discover the region.
We are from La Rioja
There is something else that makes our Rioja cycling tours different: we are from La Rioja.
This is our home.
We know the roads, the villages, the vineyards and the landscape because this is the region we grew up in and love.
That’s why a self-guided cycling tour is such a great option if you want the freedom to explore independently. We can give you the routes, recommendations and local knowledge you need to discover the region at your own pace.
But if you want to experience La Rioja 100% through the eyes of a local, our guided tours take things to another level.
With Hugo, one of our local guides, you are not simply following a cycling route.
You are riding with someone who knows this region, its villages, its roads, its food and its wine culture. He can tell you the stories behind the places you visit, recommend the local spots worth stopping at and share the things that don’t necessarily appear in a guidebook.
Most importantly, we can share our love for La Rioja with you.
For us, this is not just a destination where we happen to organise cycling tours.
This is our home.
And we want you to experience it the way we experience it: slowly, locally and with plenty of time to stop, look around, taste, talk and enjoy.
What can you experience during a Rioja cycling holiday?
Depending on your route, a cycling holiday during the grape harvest can combine:
Vineyards during the harvest
Small Rioja villages
Historic wine towns
Traditional wineries
Wine tastings
Local gastronomy
Medieval villages
San Millán de la Cogolla and its monasteries
Mountain landscapes around Ezcaray
Quiet rural roads
Local life during the busiest moment of the agricultural year
The sights, sounds and smells of the grape harvest
Authentic local experiences away from the main tourist routes
And because the harvest dates change every year, every visit can be slightly different.
When should you visit La Rioja for the vendimia?
If you are planning a cycling trip specifically around the grape harvest, September is usually the key month to consider, although the exact timing changes from year to year.
Some areas may be harvesting earlier, while higher-altitude vineyards can continue later.
This is why local knowledge is particularly useful.
At Vamos Bike Tours, we can help you choose the right itinerary depending on the season and what you want to experience.
Experience the Rioja grape harvest by bike

You hear the tractors and activity around the wineries.
You smell the freshly picked grapes and the beginning of fermentation.
You cycle through villages where everyone seems to be talking about the harvest.
